Tuxtla Gutiérrez and the sumidero canyon

Sumidero Canyon

Although Tuxtla Gutiérrez is not a city with many attractions in itself, it has a natural place of a great value: Sumidero Canyon. Tuxtla Gutiérrez (place of rabbits) has the Regional Museum of Chiapas, located in the Madero Park, which keeps beautiful pre-Colombian and colonial pieces.
No doubt that one of the main attractions of the city is the Zoo ‘Miguel Álvarez del Toro’, which has only native species of the State of Chiapas, such as jaguars, tapirs and ocelots, in an ample and natural place.
The beautiful Sumidero Canyon is located outside the city. There are two ways to go through it by launch, from the town of Chiapa de Corso until the dam of Chicoasén, or by car or public transportation along the road bordering the canyon, which also offers watching sites and picnic places. It is worth taking both routes. The sight from the top is spectacular, so as from the bottom where the 100 meters high reached by the canyon seem to tumble over us. This trip is pretty typical; launches depart very often, and the trip takes around two hours. The only regrettable aspect is the filthiness of the waters, due to the fuel of the launches.
Chiapa de Corso, the first Spanish settlement in the zone, has ‘La Pila’, an octagonal fountain located in the main square of the town, with the shape of a crown. Also outstanding, the Temple of Santo Domingo, which has one of the oldest bells of Latin America, and the Museum of Laca, showing the art of lacquer, which has made Chiapa de Corso known.
