Agua Azul Waterfalls

Waterfalls

The waterfalls of 'Agua Azul' are located in the Municipality of 'Salto de Agua', State of Chiapas, and they are at 64 km from Palenque. From 1980 on they were declared protected natural area, and at present, the residents of the zone administer them.

These impressive series of beautiful waterfalls are formed when the river Tulijá flows down unevenly, creating a series of ponds or natural pools. Their intense turquoise blue gives them their true natural attraction, thanks to the limestone riverbed.

Surrounded by such a dazzling and rich vegetation, one becomes captive by the beauty of the river, its shine and intense turquoise color. When the waters go down the different levels, they form beautiful curtains covering the enormous limestone rocks with their whiteness, which turn gold in the sun.

The waterfalls of Agua Azul, due to their abrupt relief and their natural beauty, allow the visitor to carry out different ecological tourism activities, such as: camping on the banks of the river Tulijá, bird watching with the help of the park rangers, swimming in the Tulijá, which is a much more pleasant activity due to its bluish tonalities.

You can also take pictures of the waterfalls. It is a recommendable activity, because you can enjoy the color tonalities of the river waters, and the good condition of the jungle next to its banks.
