archeological ruins and town of Cholula

Roofs and Cholula pyramid as background

Only 20 minutes from Puebla’s downtown, Cholula is remarkable by its great pyramid. Due to a simple view of the hill and a yellow church on the hill top, it is hard to believe that this once was the largest pyramid (in regards to extension) in Mexico. It is composed of various pyramids constructed one on top of the other. Upon the arrival of the Spaniards, it is believed that they did not know that there was a pyramid under the hill in where they built the Nuestra Señora de los Remedios Temple. Nowadays the Mexican government has taken charge of digging up a part of it and converting it into a museum. Perhaps the most interesting part of the pyramid is its underground tunnels constructed by archeologists to access and study the layers of the pyramid, you can visit them with a guide.  In the outer part, there are ruins of ceremonial places, and wide stairs leading to the Temple of Nuestra Señora de los Remedios, from where you can view the whole town, with the Volcano Popocatepetl in the background.
Cholula is also famous by its churches; it is said that it has 365 temples, one for each day of the year. In the main square of the town, we find the Convent of Saint Gabriel, from the XVI century, leading to three beautiful churches: the magnificent Royal Chapel, The Chapel of the Third Order, and the Temple of Saint Gabriel.
