Built by the Aztecs on an island in the middle of the Texcoco lake,
and baptized as Tenochtitlán, the metropolis was stretching
over the lake through the filling of the waters. After the conquest,
the Spaniards built the new city on the Aztec Capital.Nowadays, the
city on the lake is Mexico City.
Being the largest city of the world, with approximately 25 million
inhabitants, this is a place of extremes, where, everyday, poverty and
richness, order and chaos, modern and ancient aspects meet; in brief,
a place to adore or simply hate.
The main point of the city is its historic center. The
‘Zócalo’ (main square), is surrounded by
attractions, such as the Cathedral, which struggles everyday against
the sinking of its bases; the National Palace, headquarters of the
presidency, with its magnificent murals; the ruins of the main altar,
remains of the Aztec city, and so many museums to visit in the
surroundings.
Within the most remarkable attractions of this metropolis, we find the
big National Museum of Anthropology, with a very complete collection
of objects and relics of the Mesoamerican cultures. The Forest of
Chapultepec, a typical place to walk, with the castle and museum of
the same name. The Palace of Fine Arts, with its wonderful
architecture and murals. The typical suburb of Coyoacán, with
its bookstores, craftsmanship, museums and cultural environment. The
Basilica of Guadalupe, the main pilgrimage place for Mexicans, and
next to the city, the Xochimilco Canals, with their typical boats
decorated with characteristic bright colors.
Add to that an impressive amount of museums, monuments, markets,
craftsmanship centers and typical places.
