Archeological Ruins of El Tajín

Pirámide de los Nichos

The archeological zone of 'El Tajín' (place of thunders) is located in Papantla, Veracruz, at 10 minutes from the city of Poza Rica. Veracruz, singular by its splendor in Mesoamerica, evidences centuries of evolution and development. In special, the pyramid of the niches gives us the exact dimension of their wisdom and degree of perfection in different sciences.

Thus, we know that the Totonaca culture was a people that had complex experiences in astronomical and meteorological themes, so the movements of the sun, moon and the planet were familiar to them.

Their great religiosity is implied in each of their acts. They counted time in religious, agricultural and astronomical years; the century had 52 years, the practice of circumcision and the cranial deformation were allowed only to superior social classes. They knew the wheel, although it is believed that they did not use it because they did not have pulling animals, something that may be true. However, in their constructions there are no arches or circumferences, but we find the use of the wheel in some mud toys. It is possible that the use of the wheel with a practical purpose had not been common, because it had the sacred shape of the eye and the moon.

The pottery that has been found is varied; yokes, palms, axes, padlocks, and the enigmatic and beautiful smiling faces.

No doubt that one of the most frequent elements in the buildings of the archeological area is the fret. Although this symbol was used by almost all pre-Colombian cultures, its use was more general in 'El Tajín', where we can admire it in the ascend beams of the pyramid of the niches, the building of the columns, the residential and monumental buildings, both in 'Tajín Chico' and 'Tajín Grande.'
