Hanging among hills, there is no doubt that Guanajuato is one of the
most beautiful cities of Mexico.
Founded in 1559, its name means ‘place of frogs’. In the
past, it was surrounded by gold and silver mines, which enriched the
families of the zone and left a legacy in the city, fine buildings and
a wonderful architecture.
The main attractions of Guanajuato are downtown, and they are easy to
visit just walking. The magnificent building of the
‘Juárez’ Theater, in French style, is located in
the main square, or ‘Jardín de la Unión’,
and some blocks to the south, we find the Iconographic Museum of Don
Quixote, with art pieces related to the character created by Miguel de
Cervantes.
To the north, we find the ‘Plaza de la Paz’ (Peace
Square), next to the beautiful Basilica ‘Nuestra Señora
de Guanajuato’, the Supreme Court and the Municipal Palace. This
is a good place to sit and have a coffee, while beholding the life of
Guanajuato.
The spectacular University of Guanajuato, in a Moorish style, is up
the street, dominating part of the city. The Jesuit Temple is next to
it, and some blocks away, the museum ‘Casa Diego de
Rivera’, with a good collection of works of the painter.
The famous monument to the ‘Pípila’, is located on
one of the hills surrounding Guanajuato, and it is the perfect place
to observe the panorama of the city.On the other hand, the Museum of
the Mummies always amazes with its amorphous bodies. The
‘Alhóndiga de Granaditas’ represents a building
with history, in a remarkable structure.
Finally, the former ranch San Gabriel is a good representative of the
employer houses of that time.
