Guerrero Negro (Black Warrior) is a small place in Baja California Sur, next to the Vizcaíno Desert.
It does not have big
attractions in itself; however, it attracts hundreds of visitors every
year, because it is close to the Natural Park of the Gray Whale.
Every year, from January to March, these enormous cetaceans show up,
looking for warmer waters to mate and give birth to their
offspring. They travel from Alaska, reaching even the coast of Jalisco.
Nevertheless, it is the lake ‘Ojo de Liebre’ (Scammon’s), near Guerrero Negro, the one that has most whales.
When visiting the lagoon, it is possible to watch these animals from
the shoreline, from the watchtower of the lagoon, or else you can hire
a boat to take you closer to the whales. The spectacle is wonderful,
being able to behold and get surprised with the beauty of these giants
is an experience difficult to express with words. Also, through
special earphones, you can hear the singular sounds the whales make.
Another attraction of Guerrero Negro are the enormous salt mines in
the outskirts of the city, which are the biggest of their type in the
world, producing a third of the world salt. It is also possible to
visit the processing place of this mineral, which is the main source
of income of Guerrero Negro.
This is also a good place for bird watching, which gather in the
lagoons and rivers of the zone.
