Founded in 1541 with the name of Valladolid, after the independence of
Mexico, it was baptized as Morelia, honoring José María
Morelos, native of the city, and masterpiece of the independence
movement.
Rich in colonial architecture, as most of Mexican cities,
Morelia’s attractions are located downtown. Its cathedral is
remarkable, a magnificent mixture of herrerian, baroque and
neoclassical styles.The Government Palace, on the other hand, has
beautiful murals by the local painter Alfredo Zalce.
If you want to know more about Morelos’ life, you may visit its
birth house, the Museum ‘Casa Morelos’, and the school
‘San Nicolás.’
The regional Museum of Morelia shows archeological, historical and
ethnological pieces, whereas the Museum of the Mask has a fascinating
collection of ceremonial masks related to Mexican dances.
The State of Michoacán is one of the richest, in relation to
craft production.It may be beheld and bought at the ‘Casa de
Artesanías’ of Morelia.
