It is located in the Municipality of Palenque, to the northwest of the State of Chiapas. It was declared as Protected Zone on July 20th 1981, and its extension covers 1.772 hectares of high jungle endangered. National Park, and declared as World Heritage by the UN, it is majestic, silent and pacific. The visitor is struck by its harmonious proportions and delicate stone and stucco carvings that, as an unsurpassed decoration, make our eyes shine. Just to mention some constructions, we will cite the Temple of the Inscriptions, the Palace with its tower, surely used as astronomical observatory; the temples of the foliated Cross, of the Cross and the Sun. You can enjoy this wonderful Mayan legacy with all the comfort, because around it there are cozy facilities to rest, try the typical food and have fun. The origin of the name comes from the fact that when the Spaniards came to the area, they found it protected by stick fences, and called it 'Palenque.' Its climate is tropical with pouring rains in summer, so it is recommendable to go in a different time of the year. In this same area is the archeological zone of Palenque, which represents the classical Mayan period, important for its big constructions. It is on top of a level ground, and from there you can behold beautiful dawns and dusks. Remarkable among its constructions is the Temple of the Inscriptions, the Palace, the Group of the Crosses, where we find: Temple of the Cross, Temple of the Foliated Cross by the bas-reliefs found inside it, and the Temple of the Sun, forming all of them one of the biggest ceremonial centers from the pre – Hispanic times, not only by its history, but also by its huge architectonic development, by its stucco images, its stone bas-reliefs and its extraordinary location.
