Founded in 1531 as
‘Ciudad de los Ángeles’, its name would change some
years later to ‘Puebla de los Ángeles’, to end being
called nowadays just ‘Puebla.’
It is one of the Mexican cities keeping its Hispanic
origins; it has more than 70 churches, and most of its
buildings are richly adorned with a Mexican version of the
Spanish baroque.
One of the main colonial jewels of the city is the
cathedral, the second biggest in the country, and which
has the highest towers. Nearby, downtown, is the House of
the Culture, a former seminar, which has a sculpture
garden; offers outdoors theater and has the Palafoxiana
Library, the oldest in America.
The best museum of Puebla is the Amparo Museum, which
keeps a wide collection of pre-Columbian elements. On the
other hand, the ‘Casa de los Muñecos’ (House of the
dolls), in the University of Puebla, has one of the most
beautiful tile façades of the city.
The main tourist market of Puebla is called ‘Parián’,
where they sell all types of crafts, such as the beautiful
pottery ‘Talavera’, something typical of the area.
Sweets such as sweet potatoes, milk biscuits,
‘borrachitos’, etc. are a characteristic of Puebla,
abounding in the stores of 6 Oriente St.
Finally, though Puebla has many more buildings, such as
the church of Santo Domingo, pride of the religious
architecture of the town, whose Chapel of the Rosary has a
lot of golden decoration, said to be pure gold plates.
