Puerto Escondido

Zicatela beach

Mainly known as the paradise of surfers in Mexico, and despite the economic activity of Puerto Escondido is based on tourism, in this small town fishing keeps on being an important source of income.
The environment you can breath in its streets is relaxed, and although it has a developed hotel infrastructure, it is possible to observe more inhabitants than tourists, which gives it a town like feeling.
The main tourist zone goes from the main beach, where fishing boats anchor, up to ‘Fondeadero’ beach, where people bathe. After a bend, we find the long beach of Zicatela, meeting point for surfers and body board lovers, who come to this place lured by the amount of waves. However, be careful when bathing, because its waves are considered to be dangerous.
A nice panorama for the evening is walking along the promenade, parallel to the bay, where there is plenty of stores offering typical crafts of the zone, souvenirs, restaurants and bars where they offer live music at night.
During the day, you can hire a boat in the bay, and visit the wonderful turtles or ‘camaguas’ (as this type is called in the Caribbean) that dwell in this part of the Pacific Ocean. The trip consists of sailing away, trying to sight turtles; when the bargeman sees one, he will dive to catch it, show it to the tourists and free it later.
