Sierra Tarahumara is southeast of Chihuahua City, a mountainous ridge
stretching along a zone of 25,000 square kilometers, with plenty of
canyons reaching up to 3,046 meters high, even deeper than the
Colorado Canyon.
The native Indians Rarámuris dwell there, about 50,000, living
in caves and wooden huts. They are from the area, so it is common to
bump into them in the nearby cities. There is an area in the sierra,
called ‘Barranca del Cobre’, consisting in 20 canyons,
which, altogether, are four times bigger than the Great Canyon in
Arizona, and offer a great beauty for the visitor.
One of the best alternatives to visit the sierra is taking the train
between Chihuahua and the Pacific Ocean, which crosses 87 tunnels and
35 bridges of an overwhelming beauty, which give it the nickname of
‘the most spectacular railway of the world’. This stops
briefly on the way, in the towns of Creel and Divisadero, where you
will be able to stay if you wish to stop, and enjoy the splendid
landscapes of ‘Barranca del Cobre’. The trip from
Chihuahua to Los Mochis (in the Pacific) takes from 12 to 16 hours,
depending on the train you take (1st or 2nd
class).
