  MEXICO Basic Data

General Information

Mexico is, along with Canada and The United States, part of North America.Its limits are The United States to the north and Guatemala and Belize to the south. with the characteristic of facing the sea not only in the east, but also in the west, in this case, the Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean. 
It comprises a surface of 1,972,547 square kilometers.It has the largest peninsula in the world, Baja California.To get to any city limiting with The United States from Mexico City, such as Juárez City, it is necessary to go through 1,900 kilometers, whereas between Mexico City and Cuauhtémoc City, near Guatemala, there are 1,200 kilometers.

It has a population, according to the 1995 census, of more than 91,2 million, being 25 million in Mexico City.Then, in importance and population, we have Guadalajara and Monterrey. 
The Mexican population is mostly crossbred, with an important native minority distributed all along the country, because there is a great native ethnic and language variety.

Politically, Mexico is a Federal Republic, divided into 31 states and a Federal District, whose capital city is Mexico City.  

The main language in Mexico is Spanish; nevertheless, there are 50 native dialects spoken in the country, this means that approximately 7 million people, from which a 15% don’t speak Spanish.Many Mexicans speak at least a bit of English, or understand some words, especially in frontier cities. 

Almost a 90% of the Mexican population is catholic; about a 5% practice other varieties of Christianity, as there is cult freedom.The Mexican Catholic Church is one of the most conservative of Latin America, being its main symbol Our Lady of Guadalupe, a dark skinned virgin, a manifestation of the Virgin Mary, who is said to have appeared to a Mexican Indian called Juan Diego in 1531.

Located on the former Texcoco Lake, Mexico City has 350 neighborhoods (called ‘colonias’), and it is within the Federal District; thus, all the powers ruling the country are there. 
Surrounded by mountains and volcanoes, it stretches along a surface of 2,000 square kilometers, being an overcrowded city, with a lot of pollution; it usually inspires extreme feelings in the visitors, from hatred to love. 
Mexico City, as any Latin American capital city, represents the economic, political and cultural center of the country.It is a cosmopolitan place, where fun and cultural places abound.
The visitor in Mexico, as Mexicans simply call their capital city, must try to get to know this city patiently, in spite of being a bit tiring, it finally charms everybody.
