  MEXICO  Seguridad

In the city

In the city

Since the outburst of the Mexican economic crisis in 1995, insecurity and delinquency have increased considerably in Mexico.   Although in general burglary and pick pocking are not so common, car robbery is very usual, but kidnapping is less usual.   To prevent possible losses, in the first case, make sure to rent an insured car, and don’t park in remote places, dark or lonely streets.

In relation to kidnappings, this is a delicate topic.   Prevent ‘express’ kidnappings, when criminals will try to take everything valuable from you and/or drive you to an automatic teller to withdraw the maximum possible amount of money.   Kidnappings where a ransom is demanded, generally happen in rich or known families.   Therefore, try to avoid unsafe places, don’t show off jewels or flaunt.   Be attentive to strange situations; try to be cautious.

Robberies and kidnappings in taxis have also increased, above all, in Mexico City.   To prevent a bad moment, try to take the hotel taxis, or a taxi from an established place.   Pay attention to the identifications, which must be visible near the driver.   Show a self-reliant attitude and that you know the route.   If the driver gets aggressive, don’t discuss the price and do what he says.

Hotels

Your valuable objects and travel documents may be deposited in safes hotels have for those purposes.   This is a safe place to keep your things.

On the highways

Highway robberies, not only to buses, but also to private cars, is something happening in some parts of Mexico.   Avoid driving at night, especially along unknown highways or lonely.   Don’t drive along highways known to hide robbers.   Don’t stop on the way due to strangers, not even to help somebody, although it might sound cruel.

Women traveling alone

In spite of machismo, the Mexican man uses to be respectful and educated with women. In beach areas, where the flow of tourists is very common, the Mexican man may be more impertinent and approach women traveling alone more often. If you want to prevent contact with men, or if their insistence starts bothering you, try to look somewhere else or walk away.
In general, women traveling alone will face the same danger of any tourist traveling alone. Try not to do things a Mexican woman wouldn’t do, such as drinking in a saloon, ask for a ride without the company of a man, or going alone to places far away. Be careful with drunkards and keep a certain distance when making friends if the person does not have a good aspect or looks suspicious.
